IoT has shown its capability to upgrade homes of the tech savvy. Such systems work based upon four major components. Firstly, there are sensors like temperature sensors, motion sensors or devices such as CCTV, smart speakers. This is the step where there is data collection from the environment, which could range from the room temperature using sensors or your heart rate using the smart watch.
Secondly, there’s a requirement of the cloud, which are servers on the internet. Connectivity is done either wirelessly or using cables. For some devices such as CCTV, the connectivity is a crucial aspect as such data must be passed on for notification in serious cases.
Thirdly, there’s the processing of the data hence collected. Data processing could be done to deduce some meaningful information out of it. For instance, if the current temperature of your room is not within your preferred limit, the device might change it automatically.
But in some cases, there might be a requirement of human intervention.
Finally, there are interfaces responsible for interacting with the user. When a user picks up his cellphone to monitor the house, a proprietary app might be used to display the live video feed of the rooms, temperature or other details.
This interaction is now possible only due to the constant connection between the IoT devices and the user by using the internet. A smart pool of cars interconnecting to drive in autopilot is not so far off in the future if aspects other than our homes continue the trend of becoming smarter.
For achieving the benefits of IoT, users must first invest in the infrastructure required. With the cost of entry decreasing and the devices getting cheaper, it might push more people towards this innovative ecosystem. With AR, VR, 5G etc available the speed at which devices are being connected is awesome for this field. Further people are just getting to know how internet of things works so it might take a while but it is coming for sure.
Applications of Internet of Things (IoT)
The applications of IoT in the agriculture industry has helped the farmers to monitor the water tank levels in real-time which makes the irrigation process more efficient. The advancement of IoT technology in agriculture operations has brought the use of sensors in every step of the farming process like how much time and resources a seed takes to become a fully-grown vegetable.
Telemedicine, patient monitoring, wearable devices that transmit data to doctors, diagnosis, preventative medicine are some of the applications of IoT in healthcare.
3. Consumer Use
In the field of consumer use applications such as smart packaging, autonomous delivery vehicles, devices making chore purchases are in the pipeline. Especially with the advent of 5G and greater number of devices being interconnected the trend is moving towards the Internet of things.
Predictive reaparing can be done through connecting IoT-driven gadgets that have different sensor points (temperatures, vibration, voltages, currents, etc.) to other devices. Similarly remote production control and asset tracking are some of the uses of IoT in manufacturing.
IoT can be used for traffic management, toll and ticketing, public transport management, connected cars etc so it is a rapidly growing sector and the benefits of utilizing IoT technology are wide and varied.
